MANISTEE — On Saturday roughly 300 people took part in the Manistee Firecracker 5K or the 1K Fun Run to help raise funds for the track project at Manistee High School.

With roughly 300 people involved and 274 in the 5K about $5,000 were raised to assist in the ongoing track project behind Manistee High School.

“There was a great turn out, perfect weather, everything went smooth and I can’t complain,” 5K coordinator and Chippewa track coach Eric Thuemmel said.

There was also a pancake breakfast over the weekend to help pitch in as much as possible to get the track project off the ground.

“Between that and the pancake breakfast that the 350 Club had yesterday it’s all for the track,” Thuemmel said.

The new track, that will be located behind the school where the practice fields are currently, will hopefully begin construction sometime this summer.

The old track, which is no longer usable, will be replaced with a practice field.

“It’s all going to the new track, which we hope to begin construction on soon,” Thuemmel said. “They’re actually taking down the old track and they’ll make that into a practice field.”

With the race itself Donald Richmond, Portland, took first-place in the male division at 16:29.6, while Manistee track coach Hilary Edmondson took first-place in the female division at 21:57.7.

David Atkinson took first-place in the male masters division at 17:33.3 and Julie Modjeski took first-place on the female side at 22:51.1.

Thuemmel credits the help of the volunteers for making the event less chaotic with 300 participants.

“The group we had volunteering was phenomenal. It went so smooth. Everyone was saying how quick and fast everything went. We have to really be thankful for that,” Thuemmel said.
