Sidewalk sale and duck race

The Seventh Annual Duck Race will be quacking its way down the Manistee River Channel Saturday as part of the Downtown Merchants Committee’s sidewalk sale celebration. Funds raises this year will go to support the 1997 duck race and merchants’ activities for the betterment of the downtown area.

60 YEARS AGO

Shows gain

In the month of July, 1956, a total of $383,400 was reported in new building permits by City Assessor Harold Bates, a considerable increase over July of last year in which $66,900 in building permits were issued.

Finals tonight

The finals in the “100 Club” awards of the Eagles Lodge will be held tonight followed by the serving of a free ham and bean dinner to “100 Club” members at 9:30 p.m.

80 YEARS AGO

Price of milk increases

First direct effect of the record drought this summer was felt in Manistee today with the announcement by local milk dealers that they had voted to increase the price of milk 12 cents per quart. Poor pasture conditions locally and soaring feed prices nationally because of the dry spell are cited by the dealers as reason for their actions.

Tennis court completed

Construction of a concrete tennis court at the new Washington School has been completed under the WPA program calling for the repair and improvement of the school grounds. Other work is progressing nicely as workmen are now engaged in building a concrete retaining wall along the south side of the school property.
