‘Leaving Iowa’ auditions set for Aug. 22, 23 at Ramsdell Theatre

MANISTEE — The Manistee Civic Players (MCP) will be holding auditions for parts in its upcoming production of “Leaving Iowa”.

Auditions will take place at 7 p.m. on Aug. 22 and 23 at the Ramsdell Theatre, located at 101 Maple St. in Manistee.

JoAnn Muma, director, and MCP executive director, is looking to cast six to 27 men and women, ages 15 and up.

A show description calls “Leaving Iowa” as a “toast and a little roast to the undying dedication of the classic family road trip.”

The production shows the story of middle-aged writer Don Browning, who returns home and decides to finally take his father’s ashes to his childhood home, as requested.

But when Don discovers Grandma’s house is now a grocery store, he begins traveling across Iowa searching for a proper resting place for his father. This father- and-son road trip shifts smoothly from the present to Don’s memories of the annual, torturous vacations of his childhood. Don’s journey leads him to reconcile his past and present at the center of the United States. Leaving Iowa is a postcard to anyone who has ever found himself or herself driving alone on a road, revisiting fond memories of his or her youth.

No preparation for an audition is necessary. Those auditioning will be asked to read from the script.
