Northside Improvement

With cold weather around the corner, members of the Northside Improvement Association (NIA) moved picnic tables, playground equipment and a bicycle rack into the shelter house for another year. The shelter house, at the Fifth Avenue Beach Picnic Ground, was rented out nearly every weekend in the summer.

40 YEARS AGO

Smith is King

Lynn Smith, a senior at Benzie Central has been elected King for the Homecoming game against Reed City this Friday. The newly elected King is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Smith of Copemish.

60 YEARS AGO

Work on telephone building

Workmen yesterday began clearing and leveling the property behind The News Advocate and Bell Telephone buildings preparatory to the construction of a new brick dial telephone building. The building will combine a one-story equipment area with a two-story service wing, with an overall dimension of 62 by 88 feet. John E. Courtney, local Michigan Bell manager, states that the building is scheduled to be completed in March of 1957.

80 YEARS AGO

Patrol organized

Organization of a new safety patrol at the Garfield School marks the successful continuation of the safety work being carried out in the schools under the sponsorship of the Automobile Club of Merica which is endeavoring to “create the safety habit in the subconscious mind of all pupils,” according to Chester A. Parkin, safety engineer, who launched the work in this city a year ago.

Drive-away

A drive-away of at least 25 new cars will be a feature of the Chrysler and Plymouth district dealers’ meeting to be held here tomorrow with about 30 representatives of communities from the Straits south to Shelby in attendance at a luncheon at Hotel Chippewa preceding the afternoon business conference.
