The $1,000 grant will go toward the replacement of a new roof on the keepers quarters at the Big Sable Lighthouse.

SPLKA executive director Peter Manting said that he is pleased to see the Ludington community and SPLKA membership continue to step up with financial support when needs arise for the Big Sable Lighthouse.

The total cost of the project is $33,000, and SPLKA has raised just under $10,000 with small grants and a year-end plea to its membership.

“We have submitted other grant requests and are waiting to hear from those funding sources as well,” said Manning.

SPLKA is hopes to complete the project this April so that when the lighthouse opens to the public on May 8, there will be a new root.

Big Sable will celebrate its 150th birthday this year. SPLKA is hoping that other local corporations, business, individuals, lighthouse enthusiasts and friends of the lighthouse will consider stepping up and helping SPLKA raise the funds to complete this project.

SPLKA’s mission is “to preserve, promote and educate the public and make our lighthouses accessible.”
