Manistee Art Institute to award Deb Guenther Memorial Scholarships

MANISTEE COUNTY — Each spring the Manistee Art Institute awards two or more scholarships to graduating seniors from Manistee County.

Deb Guenther was a well-known and beloved local artist who passed away several years ago. It had been her wish that a scholarship be established for a Manistee County graduating senior. Thus, for the 11th year, the award will be made by the MAI in her memory. Since the inception of this program, the MAI has awarded 21 scholarships.

The scholarship was designed for students who have shown an interest in art by taking at least one class in the visual arts in high school. A completed application, three personal works of art and an art teacher or school councilor recommendation is required. Students will be contacted for a personal interview, conducted by a MAI interview team after applications are received.

Seniors from the county’s high schools and home school students are eligible to apply. Though GPA is an indication of a student’s dedication and progress, the GPA is only part of the factors that enter into giving the award and is not necessarily the main factor.

The award is a one-time amount, presented to the college or university the recipient chooses to attend after graduation. While the scholarship qualification does require some art experience on the part of the applicant and a display of three works during the interview, it does not require that the applicant pursue an art career after graduation.

Applications are available through the area high schools and online: manisteeartinstitute.org, manisteeartinstitute@gmail.com or by calling (231) 723-2682.

All students that have a passion for continuing their learning are encouraged to submit an application.
