LEROY — Manistee softball rebounded from two tough losses at Cadillac on April 10 with a sweep of Pine River in a non-league doubleheader on Monday.

The Chippewas won a close first game 5-3, but blew the second game wide open with a 15-5 mercy-rule win to complete the sweep.

Sydney Arendt won the first game in the circle, notching 7 strikeouts and walking just one, despite having little help from her batters. Manistee had just five hits in the entire contest.

Hailey Morin had one hit and batted in a run, Erin Dorn went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Emma Witkowski had one hit and drove in 2 runs.

Nikki Zimmerman won the nightcap, and gave up no earned runs in the contest. She helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Sara Schaefer and Madison Miller each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Erin Vander Weele went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Dorn and Emma Witkowski each drove in a run.

“We’ve had some illness plague this team, and we’re just now getting healthy,” Manistee head coach Paul Maksym said. “Once they get some confidence in themselves and realizing that they can play this game, I think we’ll start to do well.”

TRAVERSE CITY — Manistee’s boys golf posted a second-place finish at a 9-hole tri meet in Traverse City on Monday.

The Chippewas shot a team score of 205, second to Kingsley’s 199 and ahead of Kalkaska’s 219 at Elmbrook Golf Course.

Sebastian Brostrup led the way for Manistee with a score of 41. Rocco Stazczak and Emil Kallio each shot an even 50 and Keagan Thomas carded a 64 in his first match of the year.

“All-in-all I wasn’t disappointed,” Chippewas head coach Mike Swanson said. “We’re just getting in game shape, the aim for us right now is to improve every match. The guys are working on specific aspects of their game and trying to turn it up.”
