Manistee fights through windy conditions in conference meet

LUDINGTON — Manistee golf took third-place Wednesday at a Lakes-8 meet at the Lincoln Hills golf course in Ludington.

The Chippewas shot a 179, which was a little ways off of the top two teams in the league on this day. Ludington won the meet with a 161 and Muskegon Catholic Central was second with a 164.

Despite the high score, Manistee coach Mike Swanson is pleased with how his team played in less than perfect conditions.

“We shot 174 the other day, but this is a difficult golf course and there were tough conditions,” he said. “I am really pleased with the scores. I’m pleasantly surprised.”

Sebastian Brostrup led the Chippewas with a 40, Ethan Anderson shot a 45, Jayden O’Hagan shot a 46  and Rocco Staszczak shot a 48.

Onekama golf struggles in NWC opener

TRAVERSE CITY — Onekama finished seventh in its Northwest Conference opener on Wednesday night.

The Portagers shot a 467 over 18 holes, well behind Leland in first place with a 338.

Nick Falk was the top Onekama golfer with a 101, Kyle Peterson shot a 109, Travis Read shot a 119 and Ben Johnson shot a 138.

“It was a tough night,” Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow said. “We struggled with the cold, we struggled with our games and we struggled with the course.”

Onekama track begins the season

MESICK — The Onekama boys and girls track teams started off its Northwest Conference campaign Wednesday without the same results it was accustomed to in the Northwest Conference.

The Portager girls finished in second place with 52 teams points, while Benzie Central won with 126 points. The boys team finished with 40.5 points, which was good for third place behind Glen Lake with 61 and Benzie Central with 96.5.

Despite not being able to win the meet, Onekama showed its depth across the board.

The girls were led by Emilee MacPherson, who took first in the 100-meter dash at 14.40 and Grace Hughes won the 100-meter hurdles at 17.41.

Emily Belinsky finished third in the 100-meter dash at 14.69 and second in the 100-meter hurdles at 17.83, Yuki Babinec was third in the 800-meter run at 2:55.35, Elizabeth Belinsky was second in the 1600meter run at 6:16.37, Colleen McCarthy was third in the 100-meter hurdles at 18.41, Hughes was third in the 300-meter hurdles at 53.21, Michele Haske was second in the shot put at 28’05’’ and McKayla Haske was third in the high jump at 4’08’’.

The relay teams fared well, too, starting with the 400-meter relay team that finished in second at 55.15 and the 800-meter relay team that finished second at 1:59.93with MacPherson, Babinec, Hughes and Kassidy Ward. The 1600-meter relay team of McCarthy, Ashley Elo, Elizabeth Belinsky and Elizabeth Domres also took second at 4:50.42.

The only first-place athlete for the Portager boys was freshman Taylor Bennett in the high jump at 5’09’’.

Gary McBride led the way by being second in the 1600-meter run at 4:57, Blake Soper finished in third place in the 100-meter dash at 12.66 and second in the long jump at 17’10’’, Joeb Reed was third in the 200-meter dash at 25.17, Jeremiah Torrey was third in the 800-meter run at 2:12.18, Olev Harstad was third in the 300-meter hurdles at 48.47, Zachary Belinsky was third in the shot put at 39’07’’ and Dane Mertes was third in the discus at 112’04’’.

The 800-meter relay team of Trent Johnson, Torrey, Reed and Soper took second at 1:39.79, the 1600-meter relay team of Justin Zielinski, Torrey, Reed and Bennett took second at 4:01.53 and the 3200-meter relay team of McBride, Jarrett Buckner, Johnson and Torrey took second at 9:28.74.

MCC golf stays busy

MANISTEE — Manistee Catholic Central golf kept busy on Wednesday with a non-league win over McBain.

The Sabers shot a season-low 167, which was far below McBain’s 206.

MCC’s John Slivka medaled with a 37, Preston Picardat was second overall with a 40, Jacob McComb was fourth overall with a 43 and Nick Hansen was fifth with a 47.

The Sabers will be back in West Michigan D-League action on Tuesday at Lakeside Links.
