Brethren, MCC heading to state Quiz Bowl finals

EAST LANSING — Teams from Manistee Catholic Central and Brethren High School will be making the trip to the campus of Michigan State University this weekend to compete at the Quiz Bowl state finals.

Members of the Brethren High School and Manistee Catholic Central Quiz Bowl teams square off in the West Michigan D Conference finals back in February. The two teams will be in East Lansing this weekend to compete in the Quiz Bowl state finals.

For the Brethren Bobcats Quiz Bowl team, the next 14 days are going to be filled with plenty of excitement according to coach Julie Riggs. For them it will be the state finals competition this weekend followed up by the nationals next weekend.

“We are very excited about the next two weekends of competition,” said Riggs. “The kids definitely feel elite in just being in attendance at both MSU and Chicago.”

Brethren team members include Olivia Jacobs, Mary Voorhees, Hunter Wojciechowski, Heather VanderBie, Taylor Cordes, Jacob Cook, John Schaefer and Charlee Schaefer. Riggs praised their efforts this season.

“The team, but more specifically the seniors of John, Jacob, Heather and Mary are so deserving of this,” said Riggs. “They are just days from graduating and surely are leaving a legacy behind.”

Riggs said the success of this year’s senior class is setting a challenge for next year’s returning team members.

“The bar has been set high for future Brethren quiz bowlers! But with this high expectation it has intrigued underclassmen to strive to be on this team,” said Riggs. “Kids want to be a part of this success. As their coach, I couldn’t be prouder. They are not only high academic achieving students but also excellent ambassadors of Brethren High School.”

Also competing for the state crown in East Lansing will be the Manistee Catholic Central Sabers under the direction of coach Jason Allen. Back in February the Sabers captured the West Michigan D Conference title, defeating the Brethren Bobcats in the championship round to qualify for the state competition.

Team members include Max Papenfuss, Elizabeth Slivka, Joe Buswinka, Jacob McComb, Molly McLinden, Sean Dougherty, Josh Fleszar, Logan Miller and Bobby Jacobson. Just like the Bobcats, it is the second straight year this group has qualified for the state tournament.

Allen was out of town this week and unavailable for comment about the upcoming state final competition. However, after the West Michigan D triumph in February he praised the efforts of the team.

“The team did put forth a great effort and we are very proud of all our kids,” said Allen. “Many of our kids shined today and now we get to go to the state tournament in Lansing.”
