Area bicyclists gathered Wednesday evening for the annual Ride of Silence, which honors those injured or killed in bicycling accidents.

Nearly 20 participants assembled at Manistee High School before setting off on their trek through Manistee, during which they rode silently in the form of a funeral procession to pay homage to those lost and raise awareness of the real dangers non-motorized travelers face.

The local event marked the third annual organized in Manistee County while the Ride of Silence observed its 15th year worldwide. The event originated at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas, after an endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit and killed by the mirror on a passing bus.

Ride of Silence committee members will raffle off helmets at Manistee’s Vogue Theatre on Saturday to encourage cycling safety.
