Onekama to graduate 33 on Sunday

ONEKAMA — Thirty-three members of the class of 2017 at Onekama Consolidated Schools will be presented diplomas at Sunday’s 118th commencement exercises.

Graduation will take place at 2 p.m. in the school gymnasium and will honor the class for their achievements throughout their school years.

The class of 2017 is unique in five students have accumulated a perfect 4.0 grade point average to share the valedictorian honor. They are Jarrod Berard, Grace Hughes, Michele Haske, Kiera Bromley and Lauryn Johnson who will be delivering a joint valedictory address during the ceremony.

Berard is the son of Thomas Janet Berard, of Kaleva, and in the fall he will be attending Michigan State University. Hughes is the daughter of Kevin Hughes and Patty Acker, of Onekama, and her plans call for attending Grand Valley State University in the fall.  Haske is the daughter of  Mike and Amy Haske, of Onekama, and she plans on attending Eastern Michigan University.

Bromley is the daughter of Ted and Jennifer Bromley, of Onekama and she will be attending Calvin College in the fall. Johnson is the daughter of Ben and Helen Johnson, of Manistee, and her plans are to attend the University of

This year’s salutatorian address will be given by Quinn LaMont, who finished with a 3.98 grade point average. She is the daughter of James and Erin LaMont, of Bear Lake, and will be attending Central Michigan University in the fall.

Students from the class of 2017 at Onekama High School, who will be graduating with honors besides Berard, Haske, Hughes, Bromley, Johnson and LaMont are Kyle Peterson, April Hopwood, Devon Edmondson, Gabe Sidor, Kassidy Ward, Marilyn Bowers, Ashley Elo, Kelly Hall, Kassie Hook, Mckayla Haske and Makala Spearman.

Serving as officers for the class were Bowers (president), Berard (secretary) and Johnson (vice president). Class representatives included Michele Haske, Hall, Hughes and Bromley.

This year the class selected as its motto “To be old and wise, you must first be young and stupid…we have that part covered.” The class song is “You’re Going to Miss This” by Trace Adkins. Class colors are Rose Gold and Black and class flower is White Lilac.

Those in attendance will also get the opportunity to enjoy a slideshow on the class that was put together by Kiera

The middle/high school bands will be playing the processional and recessional for the graduates. They will also be playing the “New Castle March” by Johnnie Vinson during the ceremony.
