PREP ROUNDUP: Chippewa baseball sweeps Mason County Central, 15-10 and 9-7

MANISTEE — Manistee baseball completed its first doubleheader sweep of the season Friday, defeating Mason County Central by scores of 15-10 and 9-7.

Evan Bauman and Austin Guenther were the winning pitchers for the Chippewas, who used 4-run fifth innings in both games to salt away the sweep.

Manistee blew the first game open in the third inning, when they scored 9 runs on 6 hits and very nearly batted around twice.

Chase Swidorski had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs in the game, two of them on a sacrifice fly in that monster third inning. Guenther also had 3 hits, scoring 3 runs and driving home another, Mayan Liston crossed the plate 3 times and Logan Buren and Mayan Liston each had 2 RBI in the contest.

Manistee rallied back in the late innings in the nightcap, overturning a 7-5 deficit with 4 runs in the fifth.

Austin Pefley’s RBI single sent Ryan Vander Weele home with the tying run and scored the game-winner himself on a wild pitch.

Ian Pinkerton went 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and another driven in, and Swidorski, Vander Weele and Cameron Smith each had 2 hits in the contest.

Guenther picked up the win with 2 scoreless innings of relief, retiring all 6 Spartan batters he faced.

The Chippewas wil be right back at it when they host the Chippewa 350 Club Invitational tournament to day starting at 10 a.m.

Chips split with Pentwater, Benzie

MANISTEE — Manistee’s boys golf team continued its run-up to the Division 3 regionals with a second-place finish at a tri-meet the Chippewas hosted at Manistee National on Friday.

Manistee posted a 9-hole team score of 193, behind Pentwater’s 173 and ahead of Benzie Central’s 250.

Sebastian Brostrup led the way with a 38, Rocco Staszczak carded a 48, Ethan Anderson shot 52 and Nevin Johnson rounded out the scorers with 55. Emil Kallio posted a score of 57, Keegan Thomas shot 63 and Keaton Connell finished with a 64.

Manistee softball sweeps Spartans

MANISTEE — Manistee softball won two games from Mason County Central on Friday, its 11th win in the last 12 played.

The Chippewas won the first game 6-4 and the second 11-4.

Sydney Arendt pitched the complete game in the opener with 9 strikeouts and 3 earned runs.

Erin Vander Weele led the way at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a RBI. Sara Schaefer was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, Arendt was 2-for-3, Brittany Banks was 2-for-2 with a RBI and Hailey Moran was 1-for-3 with a RBI.

Niki Zimmerman stepped in the circle in nightcap with 6 strikeouts and 4 earned runs in 6 innings of work.

Madison Miller was 1-for-2 with a RBI, Vander Weele was 4-for-4 with 4 RBI and a home run, Schaefer was 1-for-2 with a RBI, Zimmerman was 2-for-4 with a RBI, Moran was 1-for-2 with a RBI and Cami Edmondson was 1-for-3 with a RBI.

Manistee (20-10) will be back in the Chippewa 350 Club Invitational tournament at home today starting at 10 a.m. when they open with Ludington.
