Manistee sends large contingent to state finals

SCOTTVILLE — Manistee’s track had a record-setting day at the Division 3 regionals at Mason County Central on Friday.

Four individuals and five relay teams qualified for the state finals at the meet, in which two of those relays set new school records.

As a team, the Manistee boys finished fifth at the regional meet with a score of 63. Charlevoix won the regional title with a score of 80.

The girls placed eighth with 38 points in the meet, which was won by Benzie Central’s 118.

The Chippewa 1600- and 3200-meter relays will have fresh entries on the wall of the Manistee gymnasium after each team finished third, but eclipsing the qualifying times for the state finals.

The team of Jack Sandstedt, Anselmo Sarabia, Tyler Peck and Blake Mikula set a new school record in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:28.50 and Sarabia, Peck, Jacob Gustad and Elliott Kamaloski set the new Manistee mark in the 3200 with a time of 8:23.67.

Sandstedt, Allen Mikula and Logan Guenthardt finished second in the 800-meter relay in 1:34.62 to qualify in that event.

Individually, Tai Allen won the regional title in the long jump with a leap of 21’0”, a full 7 inches farther than the second-place jumper from Leroy Pine River.

Sandstedt also qualified for the state finals in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.91.

On the girls side, Tegan Wayward qualified in both the the shot put and the discus, finishing second in both events with throws of 36’5” and 107’3”, respectively.

Noelle Fink qualified for the state finals in the 3200-meter run, with a time of 11:50.74, which was seventh-fastest at the regional.

The girls also qualified the 800- and 1600-meter relays for the state finals.

The team of Audrey Padilla, Natalee Kott, Erin Dorn and Taylor Williams finished second in the 1600 with a time of 4:11.04 and placed third in the 800 with a time of 1:50.93.

Manistee boys coach Eric Thuemmel was leased with his team’s performance at the regional.

“We have a nice contingent going down to the state finals,” Thuemmel said. “All the relays ran their best time, there were some exciting races. It was a pretty good meet overall.”

Looking ahead to the state finals, Thuemmel said that the team’s goal is to place in the top eight of each event.

“Tai (Allen) has a good shot at placing in the top three,” he said. “He’s been one of the top three or four guys in Division 3 all year. He has a real shot at finishing his last high-school competition as an All-Stater.”

The Division 3 state championship meet will be held at Comstock Park High School on June 3.
