Forest Festival favorites

Car show, pet pageant, pancake breakfast and more keep visitors busy during weekend

MANISTEE — While the Manistee National Forest Festival is all about fun, there are several friendly competitions that take place.

The 26th annual Customs n’ Classics Car Show was held on Saturday afternoon at Douglas Park with 103 cars on display.

“It was a beautiful day,” said organizer Frank English. “We had as pretty a car show day as you’ll ever have.”

Awards were given out to more than 40 vehicles, along with several door prizes, such as a Craftsman toolbox, a floor jack, a creeper and gift cards.

The host pick winner (named by the Custom ‘n Classic car club) was Denny Milosch with his ’68 Camero.

English said a unique aspect of this show is that four dealerships in Manistee — Manistee Chevrolet, Manistee Ford, Watson’s Manistee Chrysler and Victorian City Car Port — also pick one winner each.

Some of the winners were:

  • Best of Show — Mike Kayes, of Greenville, 1957 Pontiac Chieftan;
  • Best Upholstery — Gary White, of Muskegon, 1971 VW Bus;
  • Best Engine — Dan W. Blunt, of Ionia, 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge Ram Air 4;
  • Best Chrysler — Walt Briggs, of Copemish, 1965 Plymouth; and
  • Best Paint — Joe and Sherri Krynak, of Boon, 1969 Chevy Camero.

On Sunday morning, more than a dozen pet owners turned out for the fifth annual Port City Pet Pageant at the Forest Festival Entertainment Area at First Street Beach.

Awards were given out in many categories, but cutest pet went to Bun Bun the rabbit. The people’s choice award went to Copper the beagle.

The Sandcastle Contest was also held on Sunday. The Madsen Family, of Manistee, won first place. The family, who took second place in last year’s contest, spent over three hours sculpting a whale.

Other “competitions” yet to take place during the Forest Festival include the crowning of the Forest Festival Prince and Princess today during Beach Buddies Kids Parade & Acitivities from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Lighthouse Park and the Duck Race at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
