Golf outing to send kids to Paris

The Catholic Youth Center in Manistee is planning a golf outing to build funds to send 11 students to Paris for the World Youth Day Conference with Pope John Paul II. The golf outing is made possible by the owners (John Read, Sr., John Read, Jr., Jeff Gorney and Lance Avery) of the Heathlands Golf Course.

Stolen auto recovered

A car, stolen from Richard A. Matthews of rural Kaleva, was recovered early this morning Manistee City Police said. Matthews’ 1969 Chevrolet was taken while parked in front of a friend’s home in Manistee. Matthews left the home just in time to see someone drive the auto away early Sunday morning.

80 YEARS AGO

Slide and rafts out

The water slide has been set out at Fifth Avenue Beach along with two rafts. A raft has been placed in shallow water for the use of small children and another raft has been placed in about 12 feet of water for older swimmers.

Orchard Beach is popular

The popularity of Orchard Beach as a haven for campers and vacationists is being shown in the steady flow of autos and trailers and their occupants into the park. At the present time there are 81 trailers drawn up for stays there and 111 campers have registered at the park. Trailers from California, Florida, Washington, D.C., Georgia, and other states throughout the Union are to be round at the park.
