Helminski taming golf courses

Joe Helminski has had a very busy summer playing golf in and around the Manistee County area. Earlier this summer he won the Traverse City Junior Golf Association Match Play Championship as well as several other tournaments. He will be a senior on Manistee High School Chippewa golf team this year where he has been a three-time All-Conference selection, three-time team Most Valuable Player and Team Captain and three-time Scholar Athlete.

40 YEARS AGO

Bear Lake barber celebrates

Victor Peterson, a barber in Bear Lake for 47 years, celebrated his 92nd birthday anniversary on July 18. He celebrated with a trip to Canadian Lakes, the eight lakes between Reed City and Mt. Pleasant where his son has a retirement home.

60 YEARS AGO

Celebrates 90 years

Mrs. Ben Peterson greeted some 75 callers Saturday afternoon at an open house in celebration of her 90th birthday. The informal social events, arranged by her daughter, Miss Gertrude Peterson, was held in Mrs. Peterson’s home on Taylor Street.

Family cookout is successful

A family cookout at the Manistee Golf and Country Club was termed a huge success by a crowd of more than 130, including members, their families and out-of-town guests in attendance. Diversion of the afternoon was a two-ball foursome with Mr. and Mrs. Arch Marshall in charge.

80 YEARS AGO

Broken pipe causes damage

The breaking of a water pipe on the third floor of the Manistee Manufacturing Company’s plant on Washington Street last night, caused an undetermined amount of damage to furniture and pieces of work in progress. The pipe broke sometime during the night, flooding an area on the third floor and seeping down to the second floor, warping woods and furniture. The water seeped down to the main floor and when discovered this morning, sawdust was placed on the floors to soak it up.

The water temperature when taken at Fifth Avenue Beach this morning registered 70 degrees and the air registered 74 degrees.
