Portage Lake Watershed Forever holding open house today

ONEKAMA — The Portage Lake Watershed Forever group will be hosting a Watershed Open House from 4-6 p.m. this afternoon at the Farr Center in Onekama.

The Watershed Open House will celebrate 10 years of watershed protection and kick off the update of the Portage Lake Watershed Forever Plan. This event is free and open to the public.

Nearly a decade ago, members of the Onekama community realized that the natural resources of the Portage Lake watershed needed protection. What resulted was the development of the Portage Lake Watershed Forever Plan. This plan describes steps that should be taken to guide management of the watershed in order to preserve and enhance it.

In this 10th Anniversary year, the watershed plan requires an update to reflect upon the accomplishments of the past 10 years and to identify new community priorities, challenges and actions for the next 10 years.

The Watershed Open House will be used to review the accomplishments of the last 10 years, describe plans for the watershed plan update and share ways for the community to get involved. There will be a short presentation, storyboards and displays, and plenty of time for informal discussion with watershed group members. Light refreshments will also be served.

Attendees are encouraged to learn more about the watershed and to share their ideas about ensuring the wise use and enjoyment of the Portage Lake watershed for present and future generations.
