Public invited on bus trip to Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary

ONEKAMA — Hard on the heels of their successful flower show, the Portage Lake Garden Club, Inc. (PLGC) is once again inviting the public to join them for a special event.

For a modest fee, guests may ride along on the deluxe charter bus traveling from the Farr Center — 5283 Main St. in Onekama — to Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary near White Cloud, and back, on Aug. 24. The trip will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A box lunch is included in the fee.

“Loda Lake is an amazing resource within our state,” said PLGC programming chair, Susan Halloran. “Run by the USDA Forest Service, the site includes an extraordinary walking trail through a variety of habitats.”

The moderately flat 1 1/2 mile hike includes 39 numbered viewing stations with a wide variety of wild flowers including pink lady’s slipper, jack-in-the-pulpit, swamp milkweed and columbine. In addition to the hike, guests will hear master gardener and environmental consultant Karen Motown speak.

Only a limited number of spaces are still available. To reserve a spot, contact Susan Halloran at (517) 881-7222 or snhalloran@yahoo.com no later than Aug. 7.
