The opportunity to meet teachers, get school pictures taken, pick up laptop or iPads and get schedules for the upcoming year is something that is covered at all of these events. What also takes place is the opportunity to get bus schedule information and to meet with guidance counselors.

Onekama Consolidated Schools staff is looking forward to another big year of learning in 2017-18 and will be ready to hit the road running for the first day of classes on Sept. 5. All the county schools are scheduled to begin classes on that date.

“We will be holding our open house and orientation for all the students from 4-8 p.m. this year on Aug. 30,” said Onekama Consolidated Schools principal Gina Hagen.

Kaleva Norman Dickson officials have been working hard all summer shining up the building and getting things ready for when the students arrive. Principal Jakob Veith said they look forward to seeing the students after the summer break.

“Our plans are to have an orientation/open house on Aug. 31,” said Veith. “The elementary students and parents are scheduled to come in from 5-5:45 p.m. while the middle/high school students will be there from 5:45-6:30 p.m. that night. Orientation for the ninth  grade  will occur during the MS/HS time period.”

Manistee Catholic Central principal Jason Allen said his staff will be busy on Aug. 30 when they will be holding an orientation program.

“We are planning on holding both our elementary and junior high/high school orientations on Aug. 30,” said Allen. “The pre-kindergarten to grade five orientation will be from 5:50-6:10 p.m. and the grades 6-12 orientation will  be from 6:45-7:30 p.m.”

CASMAN Academy director Shelly VanVoorst said the classrooms have been cleaned and things are back in place and ready to go beginning with a 1-3 p.m. open house on Aug. 30 when students can pick up their schedules and get their bus schedules.

“All the classrooms are set and the floors have been re-done and cleaned,” said VanVoorst. “I know they have been busy updating programs on the computers. July has been a busy month around the building.”

MAPS Middle/High School students will be starting the process on Aug. 14 when the junior and senior classes will be coming in between 1-3 p.m. for orientation. There will be an open orientation that evening from 4 to 7 p.m. for any grade level unable to make their regular assigned times.

“Orientation will consist of picking up their computers, getting their school pictures taken and receiving their schedules,” said Huber.

On Aug. 15 the same procedure will take place for the incoming freshmen and sophomore classes from 1-3 p.m. There will also be an open orientation that evening from 4-7 p.m.

On Aug. 15 there will be an open house beginning in the Manistee Middle/High School auditorium for the seventh grade from 6-7 p.m. and one for the eighth grade from 7-8 p.m. The open house will also consist of classroom visits, meeting the staff and a welcome from the administrative staff.

There will be an orientation for those seventh and eighth grade students from 1 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 16. That will include receiving new electronic devices, student pictures and class schedules. That evening there will be an open orientation from 4-7 p.m. for any grade level.

Parents and students from the sixth grade will have the chance to come in and look at the new configuration that will house that grade level at an open house from 6-7 p.m. on Aug. 16 that begins in the middle/high school auditorium.

The following day on Aug. 17 sixth grade students will be taking part in an orientation program from 1-3 p.m. and that evening from 4-7 p.m. there will be an open orientation.

On Aug. 18 there will be an open orientation for any grade level who couldn’t make the previous times. That will run from 8 a.m.-noon and from 12:30-2:30 p.m., but there will be no photographs taken that day.

Efforts to reach the Bear Lake Schools for times and dates for open houses and orientation proved unsuccessful as of press time Thursday.
