Historic ships to arrive in Traverse City on Aug. 17

TRAVERSE CITY —  Replicas of Columbus’ ships the ‘Pinta’ and the ‘Nina’ will be arriving  Aug. 17 to the Duncan L. Clinch Marina in Traverse City

The Maritime Heritage Alliance will host self directed tours starting  Aug. 18. Special guided tour registration is available for pre-booking.

The ‘Niña’ is called “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built” by Archeology Magazine and was constructed completely by hand without the use of power tools. In 2005, the ‘Pinta’, also a caravel, was launched in Brazil. It takes its name from the first ship to sight land in the New World.

The general public is invited for walk-aboard self-guided tours while the ships are in port. There is an admission charge with rates for adults and children with children the age of 4 being admitted at no cost.

The Maritime Heritage Alliance of Traverse City will receive a portion of the admission fee to fund their at-risk youth sailing program along with their boat restoration projects.

Teachers or organizations with a minimum of 15 participants wishing to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crew member should call (787) 672-2152 or e-mail columfnd1492@gmail.com. Above admission rates apply.

The ships will be open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No reservations are necessary. Departure is scheduled for Aug. 23.
