Men Who Care Manistee County donate to food pantry

MANISTEE — At the July meeting of Men Who Care, Manistee County ,(MWC), a vote was taken to donate $3,075 to the Matthew 25:35 Food Pantry.

Men Who Care” consists of approximately 30 men from ManisteeCounty who meet quarterly with the purpose of giving back to our community. To date in 2017 Men Who Care have donated over $9,000 to non profits located within the County.

Since it inception in 2015 Men Who Care have given over $30,000 to non-profit community groups. MWC meet four times per year and each member agrees to donate $100 per quarter to a non profit which is selected at the meeting.

The Matthew 25;35 Food Pantry’s mission is to provide food assistance to Manistee County Residents who are low income ( at, or below, 200 percent of Federal Poverty Guidelines) and are food insecure.

Their goal is to alleviate hunger in our community by operating the food pantry the second Friday of each month, from 10 a.m. to noon. The pantry is located at the St. Joseph Parish Center on Sixth Street in Manistee.

The average number of shoppers, who visit the pantry each month is approximately 145 households which accounts for 380 people. They distribute on the average, 6,579 pounds of groceries and 1,007 pounds of meat monthly. When is season, they have also received fresh produce from Jessi’s Garden, Orchard Market, Lutz Farms and number of individual farmers.

“Our goal is to eliminate hunger as well as making inroads to reduce the incidence of obesity and Diabetes within our community,” said Joan Gamche of food pantry.
