THOMPSONVILLE — The Benzie Area Radio Club will be hosting its annual Summer Model Airplane Show.

Featured will be both fixed wing and helicopter aircraft, it is one of the best and largest radio control flying fields in northern Michigan.

The air show runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Thompsonville Airport, located at 13531 Lindy Road. The airport is east of the entrance of the Crystal Mountain Resort.

Admission is free to the public. Voluntary donations will be accepted for parking on airport property.

New this year, the airshow will include a Classic Car Show. At noon there will be a candy drop for the kids and a pyrotechnics show.

BARC is expecting pilots from all over northern Michigan. The pilots will be taking off from the 2,900 feet paved runway. The air show will feature a wide variety of model aircraft. The aircraft will include several fighter planes and jets. The jets will be powered by real miniature jet engines.

Many WWII warplanes such as the P51 Mustang and Navy Corsair, will be flying. There will also be WWI biplanes.

The Thompsonville Airport will be closed to full sized aircraft during the air show. Lots of on-site parking is available for spectators. Food and drinks will be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs.

BARC is hosting the air show under a special sanction provided by the national Academy of Model Aeronautics. The AMA headquarters is in Muncie, Indiana. Check out the AMA at modelaircraft.org.
