TRAVERSE CITY — Manistee soccer dressed just 15 players for its three games on Saturday, but came away with runner-up honors at the 8-team Traverse City Christian Invitational tournament.

The Chippewas defeated Suttons Bay (3-1) and host Traverse City Christian in a shootout (0-0, SO 5-4) before falling to Marquette 3-1 in the championship game.

Elmo Sarabia, Matt Eriksson and Anthony Zambrano scored the Manistee goals in the first game, and Zambrano had the lone Chippewa tally in the final.

Manistee head coach Brandon Prince said that, for the most part, he liked what he saw from his squad in the tournament, which featured games with shorter, 30-minute halves.

“I’m not displeased. There were flashed of brilliance, but it could have been a lot cleaner most of the day,” Prince said. “I’m proud of them. I think we had the smallest roster in the tournament, and rotated guys out as best I could. I think we had five guys who played every minute of every game.”

Manistee will take a record of 5-2-1 (W-L-T) into their Lakes-8 contest at Muskegon Orchard View on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Swimmers win 2 relays at Ludington meet

LUDINGTON — Manistee’s girls swimming team won two events on the way to a second-place finish in the 5-team Coastal Conference Relays at Ludington on Saturday.

The Chippewas took first-place points in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard backstroke relay at the meet, which had no individual races.

Haley Harland, Hayley Anderson, Jaelyn Thomas and Ginger Hiipakka combined for a winning time of 4:16.44 in the 400-yard freestyle, and Anderson, Anna Lee, Lauren Mendians and Haley Johnson took the 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.53, nearly eight full seconds ahead of the field.

Mendians, Lee, Kari Zimerman and Madison Miller took second place in the 400-yard medley relay, posting a time of 4:54.73.

Muskegon’s 5-school co-op team won the meet with 130 points. Manistee finished second with 96, followed by Ludington (84), the Traverse City co-op (82) and Fremont (64).
