Chips win

A new goalie and improved passing and communication have equaled a two-game winning streak for the Manistee High School soccer team. The Chippewas picked up their second straight win Thursday at Rietz Park, building a 4-0 halftime lead and cruising past Big Rapids in a non-conference affair, 4-1. Steve Knapp made 11 saves and faced 16 shots in his second start at the net and got solid defensive help from Ryan Dahlke.

40 YEARS AGO

Derby winners named

A Brethren High School Senior has been named winner of the Michigan Salmon Derby. Kerry Hutson, 18, of Coates Highway, Brethren, landed his 32 pound, 7 ounce chinook in Manistee Lake and the fish won him a trip to Hawaii, top prize in the derby sponsored by the Manistee County Chamber of Commerce.

60 YEARS AGO

Blue and Gold game

The second annual Blue and Gold game intra-squad will take place tonight at Chippewa Field starting at 8 o’clock. All set for the game are the leading players and coaches: Coach Ray Genovese, Co-Captain Brad GeBott, who will lead the blue team tonight, Coach Mal Pearson, and Co-Captain Bob Anderson, who will captain the Gold team tonight. The practice game will aid coaches in selecting a starting lineup for the season opener here September 20 against Petoskey High.

Honored at farewell party

Mrs. Clarence Carlson was the guest of honor at a farewell luncheon yesterday afternoon given by St. Elizabeth’s Guild of the church of the Holy Trinity with the social affair being held at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. H.J. Perschbacher on Second Street. Mrs. Carlson will leave Manistee soon for Detroit where she will join her husband who is employed there.
