BEAR LAKE — Bear Lake dominated the second West Michigan D League cross country jamboree of the season, which the Lakers hosted on Wednesday.

Both the girls and boys won their meet as a team, with the boys taking the top two spots individually and four of the top six finishers.

Bear Lake’s boys team scored 24 points, well ahead of second-place Pentwater (64) and third-place Walkerville.

Gary McBride and Kaiden Hejl finished 1-2 overall in the boys race, crossing the finish line just one second apart, in times of 17:54 and 17:55, respectively.

Trey Gilbert placed fourth overall in 19:39, Luca Leffew came in sixth in 19:55 and Jarrett Buckner rounded out the scorers with a time of 20:11, good for 11th place overall.

Brethren sent three runners, and while they could not post a team score, the Bobcats fared well. Ian Cabot was the first Brethren finisher, in 22:24, 24th place overall, followed by Eric Grismore (23:22, 30th overall) and Justin Kissling, whose time and place were not available at press time due to technical difficulties.

On the girls side, only three schools brought teams big enough to post team scores. Bear Lake won the meet with 30 points, followed by Mason County Eastern, who had the first two finishers but posted a team score of 48, and Big Rapids Crossroads, which scored 54 points.

Elizabeth Belinsky was the first Laker girl to cross the line, overtaking Crossroads’ Jaylen Schroeder just yards from the finish line to place third overall, in 23:40.

Faith Corey placed fifth, in 23:51, followed by Emilee MacPherson (7th, 24:25), Yuki Babinec (8th, 24:37) and Solveig Saeternes (10th, 25.37).

Brethren’s Alexis Tracy placed 6th overall with a time of 24:03 and Taylor Cordes finished 14th in 27:08.
