Council hears land sale request comments

A proposal to sell city property on the North riverfront between Washington Street and US-31 received strong support from downtown merchants and mixed opposition from veterans’ groups last night in a special hearing in city hall. The hearing was called to gather citizen input into a proposal to sell the parcel of property, presently the site of municipal parking lot, a veterans’ memorial and a riverfront green belt. Developer Joel Altman has asked to purchase the property for construction of a six to eight story apartment building to house senior citizens under a federally subsidized rental program. The city made no decision at last night’s informational hearing and no decision on sale of the property will be made until after the Altman company submits site plans for the proposed project.
