Work on MHS tracks begins

Work officially started yesterday on Manistee High School’s “Centennial Track” located near Ninth and Elm streets. The grading work is being done by members of the West Shore Community College heavy equipment class. Manistee Bank and Trust Company donated for the track, Hardy Salt is giving the cinders for the base that goes under the asphalt track, and the development is being helped along by work and contributions from many others, according to school Superintendent Thomas Culbert. Plans call for the completion of the track next spring.

Kaleva marksmen win turkeys

The Kaleva FFA turkey shoot was held on Sept. 22 this year. There were many appearances by turkeys at the shoot that day. The winners of the turkey relay were Ken Hilliard, Henry Weller, Walter Ziehm, and John Pihl. The winners of the chicken relays were Duane Luhtanen, Ken Hilliard, Charles Snyder and Walter Ziehm.

Appeal made for clothing

An appeal has been made through the Salvation Army for clothing for a needy 14-year-old orphaned boy, now in care of probate court. The garments asked for are underwear, pajamas, socks, sweater and an overcoat. Anyone having second hand garments of this character in fair condition that they wish to give to the boy are asked to telephone the Salvation Army.

Fire Prevention Week

This week has been proclaimed by the President, state governors and Mayors of the cities as Fire Prevention Week. It will be widely observed throughout the United States by civic, fraternal and business organizations, schools, churches, industrial and mercantile establishments, as well as by the press. Motion pictures and radio will be used to emphasize the seriousness of fire losses and the importance of exercising care.
