Reader feels constant chaos with the Republicans and Trump

TO THE EDITOR:

The American presidency has been turned into a reality show with daily crises and Donald Trump as director. The Republicans in Congress enable this constant chaos. Just look at healthcare and climate change.

Over the past few months, several iterations of “Trumpcare” have thankfully failed to pass both chambers of Congress. Each version exposed the Republicans’ true intent, to take healthcare away from ordinary Americans and give a huge tax cut to their wealthy donors. In order to achieve this tax cut for the wealthy, Republicans are willing to take away guaranteed protections for those with pre-existing conditions; impose annual and lifetime caps; cause millions to lose coverage; permanently gut Medicaid for the disabled and nursing home patients; allow insurers to scam patients with junk policies; and financially weaken Medicare. The vast majority of Americans, health advocacy groups, and health professional associations have opposed these harmful Republican plans.

Republicans have mismanaged and deliberately sabotaged the Affordable Care Act by threatening to deny subsidy payments to insurers and slashing enrollment efforts. This confusion and uncertainty has destabilized the individual marketplace, thus jeopardizing the healthcare of millions. Thanks to the veracity of the free press, we learned that the HHS secretary, in charge of this sabotage, wasted over a million taxpayer dollars on private charter flights. He has resigned in disgrace.

In an embarrassing display of ignorance, Trump has withdrawn the United States from the Paris climate accord. Climate change deniers like him may point to a few outlier studies, but the vast majority of research supports man made climate change. That is why over 97 percent of climate scientists agree that climate change is both real and man made. That is why every other industrialized country supports the historic Paris climate accord.

Hurricanes are not directly linked to climate change, they are weather events. But hurricanes, such as Irma and Harvey, will be more severe due to climate change . Warmer oceans and a higher sea level cause increased flooding, damage and deaths.

There is also one indisputable fact: carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the earth’s atmosphere have just reached 400 ppm (parts per million), a level not seen in human history. CO2 is a green house gas and its rapid rise from 1950 to the present is from the burning of fossil fuels. The causal links for manmade climate change from CO2 are not that complicated: Humans burn fossil fuels, releasing massive quantities of CO2. CO2 levels in the atmosphere rise, creating a greenhouse effect. The earth warms and climate changes.

The nation needs serious leaders with the knowledge, intelligence, and courage to confront the issues facing us. Whether it’s health care, Russian election meddling, climate change or North Korea, a tweeting president and a Republican Congress more concerned about keeping power than addressing the nation’s needs do not deserve to be in office. We can do better. Call your representatives on issues you care about, and vote in the next election.
