MANISTEE — With the Division 4 girls golf regionals looming, Manistee played its last competitive match before the postseason opens, an 18-hole dual match against Big Rapids Monday at the Manistee Golf and Country Club.

The Chippewas lost the match 375-400 to a Big Rapids team that finished 10th in last year’s Division 3 state finals. It was Manistee’s first loss of the season.

Alice Fink-Jensen led the way with a score of 84, Tiffany Elo had a season-low 18-hole score of 95, Katie Huber shot 104 and Sara Thompson rounded out the scorers with a 117.

Of the non-scorers for the Chippewas, Trista Arnold carded a 132 and Lily Sandstedt shot 133.

Despite the loss, in which Manistee shot just four strokes higher than its season best for 18 holes, Chippewas coach Bridget Warnke said that it was good preparation for the upcoming postseason

“I’m happy that we had an 18-hole match, we haven had one in three or four weeks,” Warnke said. “And honestly, it was good to go up against tougher competition against a bigger school, because that’s what regionals are going to be like.”

Manistee’s Division 3 regional tournament will take place at Harbor Pointe Golf Course in Harbor Springs on Thursday, Oct. 12, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

The Chippewas will have a chance to play a practice round on the course on Wednesday, to familiarize themselves with it the day before the most important match of the season so far.

“I saw some things we’re going to work on in practice,” Warnke said. “The girls know, when they have a bad shot, what they did. We shot only four strokes lower than our previous best, and the girls think they had a bad round, so if we know that and we can fix some things, I definitely think we can get (a) lower (score) on Thursday.”

With a top-three finish at the regional tournament on Thursday, Manistee would qualify for the Division 4 state finals at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers East golf course on Oct. 20-21.
