First Congregational holds successful choir sing-off

MANISTEE — This past Sunday, the Manistee First Congregational Church held its first annual Choir Sing-Off Event.

A total of six different choirs competed, each performing two different pieces. There were cash prizes offered for first, second and third place as well as People’s Choice award in the amounts of $100, $75, $50 and $25, respectively. There were a variety of choirs from Manistee and Onekama churches, Benzie Central High School, the Manistee Choral Society as well as the Manistee Youth Chorus.

The event lasted about an hour and was followed by a reception where the winners were announced.

Benzie Central High School Chamber Singers took first place, the Manistee Choral Society placed second, and the Onekama Church of the Brethren and the Seasonal Singers from the Onekama Congregational Church tied for third. The Manistee Youth Chorus winning the People’s Choice Award.

The panel of three judges stated that it was a very difficult contest to judge. The event was a success and the team at Manistee First Congregational Church hopes to be able to host another sing off next year.

Manistee First Congregational Church planned the choir sing off as part of a series of musical events to offer the wider Manistee community. Last Spring they hosted an Organ Concert on Mother’s Day weekend and are planning a different Choral event for April of 2018.
