Reader: 2nd Amendment not intended to protect assault weapons

TO THE EDITOR:

When the 2nd Amendment was ratified in 1791, the authors had no idea about the ability of a citizen to purchase a Ruger AR assault-type riffle or numerous other weapons. The bastardization of the 2nd Amendment to justify the purchase of such weapons reflects on the failure of education and critical thinking.

Life in 1791 required citizens to be able to protect themselves in case of invasion from foreign powers. That citizens would be able to purchase guns and ammunition available today was not the reason for the 2nd Amendment.

Sunday was another sad day in America, one right after another. Our founding fathers would be mortified. So am I.
