Maritime Heritage Alliance receives $10,000 Gift

TRAVERSE CITY — The Maritime Heritage Alliance recently received an anonymous gift of $10,000 to support the 9th year of their “SAIL Champion Program” (Success Always Involves Learning).

SAIL Champion is a hands-on sailing experience for youth that teaches leadership and responsibility in conjunction with on board, one-on-one therapeutic counseling.

Sailing a tall ship requires teamwork, patience, and responsibility.

Participants train as crew members and develop the physical, mental and social skills required to sail. Youth that participate are primarily referred by nonprofit agencies in the Northwest Michigan region and have often experienced neglect or abuse.

This unique program offers powerful inspiration for at-risk youth and fundamental skills that they can build upon into adulthood.
