NORTHPORT — Bear Lake girls basketball started the season on the right note Wednesday with a low-scoring win over Suttons Bay-Northport.

The Lakers held Suttons Bay off in the closing minutes to win 35-30, and to start the season 1-0.

Neither team started the game fast with the Norsemen leading 16-14 at the half. Bear Lake came out with a bit of a press in the third quarter to pull ahead a bit, and was able to hold off Suttons Bay in the fourth.

“It wasn’t ugly. It was a good game, but we just missed too many layups and too many foul shots,” Bear Lake coach Jeff Harthun said. “We put a little press on in the third quarter, and we worked ourselves into a 10-point lead, then we pulled it out at the end.”

The Lakers depended on the play of a few returning players down the stretch with Hayley May scoring 14 points, including a big three-point shot in the fourth. May also had 8 rebounds.

Yuki Babinec added 7 points and 4 assists, Kaitlynn Omar had 4 points and 10 rebounds, Alyssa Eisinlohr and Emily Belinsky each scored 4 points.

Belinsky made 4 free throws in the closing minutes to ice the game.

Bear Lake shot 14 for 55, good for 25 percent, and went 5 for 13 at the free-throw line. The Lakers did only have 13 turnovers.

“Emily Belinsky was 4 for 6 at the line, and that was big at the end of the game. That gave us a little cushion,” Harthun said.

The Lakers will be back on Friday at home against Baldwin to open West Michigan D League play.
