Tax rate higher

When property owners in Manistee step up to the window of the city treasurer’s office to pay their taxes within the next month or so, they will find that the rate of assessment has been increased considerably over that for the 1936 levies. While the amounts being raised for the various units, county, school, city and library, show some increase over last year, another factor in the higher rate per thousand dollars valuation is the decline in the assessed valuation of property in the city.

Streets still icy

Because of ice and snow on city streets, traffic conditions remained hazardous today but sanding and salting on main corners was expected to reduce the danger during the day. A warm sun also aided. Despite the slippery streets, only one accident has been reported in the last two days.
