MANISTEE — Manistee junior quarterback and defensive back Trevor Johns earned Division 5-6 Associated Press all-state honorable mention last week.

Despite the team’s 2-7 finish, Johns earned at least one vote as a defense back. He also earned All-Lakes 8 honors a few weeks ago where he was named on the first team as a defensive back, and on the second as a quarterback.

Johns finished with 52 tackles and had 4 tackles for loss as a defensive back last season. On offense he was 30 for 52 passing for 501 yards and 9 touchdowns through the air, and he also had 78 rushes for 702 yards and 11 touchdowns. He scored 20 total touchdowns.

“He gives us a lot,” Manistee coach Troy Bytwork said. “He’s kind of the essence of what leadership is all about. It’s a cliché, but he leads with his actions. He leads with what he does in the offseason. He just deadlifted 440 today as a 140-lber.”

The team only won two games this season, but Johns was a big part of both wins. In the biggest win of the season, a 42-28 thrashing of Ludington on Sept. 9, he finished with 275 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. He also had 7 tackles in that game.

In the team’s other win, 50-28 over West Branch Ogemaw Heights, he threw for 3 touchdowns to break the game wide-open.

Johns is only a junior and will be back next season, presumably in a similar role as last year.

“He really grew as a leader on the field as well. He’s not the biggest kid in the world. As the year wore on he seemed to only get stronger,” Bytwork said.

“Bringing back our starting quarterback and starting free safety is going to be huge for us to turnaround the record from this year.”
