RICHARD & LINDA ALBEE: Rep. Bergman should support Presidential Transparency Act

TO THE EDITOR:

President Donald Trump recently made the following statement to a crowd in Missouri as he was trying to sell the Republican tax plan: “This [the tax plan] is going to cost me a fortune, this thing, believe me. This is not good for me.”

Trump’s statement contradicts the preponderance of independent analysis showing that the GOP tax overhaul will enrich high-income households and corporations.

Every president, Republican and Democrat, for the past 40 years has released their taxes. Trump is the first modern president to hide his returns. Having citizens see the taxes of someone holding the highest office in the land is not about partisanship, but about preserving the transparency and integrity of our democracy. Citizens have a right to know if their president is compromised, has conflicts of interest or if he is telling the truth about how pending tax legislation will affect him.

HR 305, The Presidential Transparency Act, was introduced in the U.S. House months ago. It would require President Trump and all future major party presidential nominees to release the most recent three years of their taxes. It is a commonsense measure and treats all political parties equally. Rep. Jack Bergman has failed to support this important legislation. For the sake of our democracy, he needs to support it.
