Stapleton is winner

Lee Stapleton of Manistee High School was winner of a Student Senate sponsored contest to design a school flag. Stapleton, whose design was chosen out of 30 entries, won $25 for his effort.

Contracts approved for park

Local contractors are preparing to move ahead with plans to develop the Onekama Village Park, Phillip Boots, soil conservation officer for Manistee County said. The project, which is funded by various state and federal grants, will be done by Seng Crane and Excavating, Inc., and A Bird Construction, both of Manistee, low bidders on the contracts.


Zimmerman heads committee

The county study committee which is considering consolidation of Manistee County schools into one district met at Kaleva on Wednesday evening and effected a permanent organization. Harry Zimmerman of Kaleva was chosen as permanent chairman, Elino R. Lehto of Copemish vice-chairman, and Supt. V. Alton Warner of Onekama as Secretary. Four directors will work with these officers. These are Alvin Janowiak of Filer City, Jesse Sturdevant of Brethren, Lawrence Solberg of Parkdale, and Dorr Johnson of the Manistee City school.


Yule music program

Christmas music will be heard over the amplifying system on River Street at the following periods during the remainder of the week. A program will be heard from 11 to 12 p.m. tomorrow morning and three programs in the afternoon: 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. In the evenings a program will be broadcast from 7:30 to 8:30. On Christmas Eve, a program will be broadcast from 7:45 to 8:15 an on Christmas morning 9:45 to 10:15 a.m.

Local liquor sales high

Michigan’s 1937 net retail sale of spirits will fall short of the prediciated $40,000,000 it appeared today. A state liquor control commission report that net sales during the first 11 months amounted to $32,423,477 revealed December revenue must far exceed earlier maximum forecasts of holiday trade to reach $40,000,000. Sales this year in Manistee have reached $101,258.
