CADILLAC — Gopherwood Concerts brings something new to Cadillac’s Elks building, third floor, with world music from India and the Americas with Sumkali at 8 p.m. on Jan. 13.

Sumkali is a diverse group made up of musicians from North and South India and the American Midwest. Through their diverse backgrounds they have been able to craft music with a global appeal that goes beyond just fusing genres together.

Their music is a thrilling meld of Indian classical music, Bollywood, American jazz, folk, funk and Motown. They have recorded four albums, including their 2015 release “Tihai” which earned them two nominations for “Outstanding World Music Album” and “People’s Choice Award” at the Detroit Music Awards in 2016.

Based in Ann Arbor, Sumkali has been performing for over 10 years and have been lauded as one of the Midwest’s premier World Music groups.

“Sumkali plays fusion that works. Their music is a thrilling meld of Indian classical music, American jazz and more,” said San Slomovits, founder of award winning music group Gemini.
