Students holding fundraiser for Dominican Republic service trip

MANISTEE — Over the past several years the Manistee Rotary Club has been giving area young people the opportunity of a lifetime with the Rotary World Service Project.

The Manistee, Benzie and Gaylord Rotary clubs will again be taking a trip to the Dominican Republic from Jan. 27 to Feb. 3 to help in a building project. There are nine students from Manistee High School and Manistee Catholic Central making the trip this year. They will be holding a fundraiser from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan. 8 at Pizza Hut to defray costs. The students will get 10 percent of the sales and also will be holding a bake sale that evening. There are very few things in the world more rewarding then helping someone in their time of need and through this program the Rotary and the students have been helping people in the Dominican Republic with a series of building projects. The work they have done is not only rewarding for the people of those communities from the Dominican Republic, but as a service learning project for the students.

This joint effort of the Manistee, Benzie and Gaylord Rotary Clubs has allowed dozens of students to make the service learning oriented trip. However, what many people don’t realize is it is up to the students to raise the necessary funds to pay for their trip.

Local Rotary member Daryl Pieczynski said the trip is coming up very soon and the students have been working hard to raise money for the trip.

“We are leaving Jan. 27, and will return on Feb. 3,” said Pieczynski. “Right now we have nine students from MHS and MCC, as well as another college student. We have a total of 12 going from Manistee with chaperones, as well as 18 other people from Benzie and Gaylord High School.”

Pieczynski said those who would like the help the students can do so on Monday evening when they will be holding a fundraiser

“From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan. 8 we will be doing a fundraiser at the Manistee Pizza Hut,” said Pieczynski. “The group will get 10 percent of sales on dine-in and take out orders. We will also be having a bake sale, as well.”
