Up North Arts announced upcoming classes and workshops

CADILLAC — Up North Arts, the newly formed community arts center in Cadillac, is proud to announce a range of new classes and workshops designed to improve and inspire what is traditionally a solemn time of the year.

Dave Foley will again be offering “Telling Your Story.” Foley has been a freelance writer since he began teaching English at Cadillac Junior high in the mid ’70s. Now retired, he continues to write outdoor articles and columns for several magazines as well as the Cadillac News.

This session will help get you started in writing a journal, which incidentally doesn’t mean one must be compelled to write something every day.

Classes will be held Jan. 16 and Jan. 30, and the first hour will largely offer introductory material to get you started. Students will be encouraged to write something that can be shared during the Jan. 30 class.

That class will offer more specifics on developing a writing style, as well as techniques to communicate more effectively with readers. A fee is administrated.

Long time Cadillac schools art teacher, Mary Kidder, will lead a three-day watercolor workshop at 1 p.m. on Jan. 13, 20 and 27, at Up North Arts Inc.’s new location at 601 Chestnut St. in Cadillac (adjacent to the senior center). There will be a new experience each week, while attacking the basic principles of watercolor and learning to critique your work.

Supplies are provided, but feel free to bring your own. Pre-registration is encouraged. For more information or to register, contact Mary Kidder at (231) 920-8519, or via e-mail at mlkidder@gmail.com or infoupnortharts@gmail.com.

Starting on Jan. 27, local glass artist Norma Faunce will offer a intermediate skills glass fusing class. Only six students will be able to sign up, with a three week continuation of her December introductory class.

Students will be instructed on specific skills such as circle cutting, to enable them to make project ideas provided by the instructor. Cost is at a fee, plus a materials cost. Call (231) 920-8519 to register.
