MANISTEE — Manistee’s swimming future was on display in its dual meet with Ludington at the Paine Aquatic Center Thursday night.

The Chippewas lost the meet 100-68, but had some very encouraging times from a lot of different young swimmers.

Manistee won four of the 12 events, and showed its quality by sweeping the top three places in the 100-yard breaststroke and the top two places in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

“Freshmen Griffen Antal, Harrison Harland, and Ben Sullivan all dropped remarkable time in their longer swims tonight,” Zacek said. “It’s fun to see just how much better how much not only these three, but the rest of the team, continue to improve at racing.”

But it wasn’t all about the youngsters. Senior Ben Miler won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.54, and anchored the 400 free relay team, along with Sullivan, senior Nathaniel Urban and junior Caden Schmutzler, that won that race in 3:46.91.

Harland, Antal, Anderson Johns and Dylan Johnson took second place in that event, in 4:20.97.

Zach Lee, Charlie Mosher and Luke Herberger placed 1-2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Lee posting the winning time of 1:11.77.

Schmutzler and Miller placed 1-2 in the 50 free, with Schmutzler winning the race in 23.47.

“Caden Schmutzler and senior captains Ben Miller and Nathaniel Urban also swam great races tonight,” Zacek said. “My guys are totally different swimmers now compared to December, and we still have about eight weeks left of our season.”

Next up for the Manistee swimmers is a trip to Holland Christian on Saturday, Jan. 13.
