JUDITH KAY MINTON: Wants to see local schools honor Martin Luther King Jr.

TO THE EDITOR:

As a former history, government and current events teacher, a lifelong advocate of equality for all, a place maker, a union activist; I was once again dismayed when all the schools in Manistee County chose not to honor Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 15.

Do young people today really know the role he played? Do they understand he put his life on the line every day for his country?

I called the superintendents of all county schools and left messages for them. Onekama, Manistee and the Manistee Intermediate School District superintendents returned my calls; thank you.

Should the State of Michigan dictate “close the schools,” should the Michigan Education Association and NFT take the leadership? Why not those who live here?

I would love to my county to be the first in our area to honor this courageous American who tried to help so many.

I want to shout from the highest rooftop: “I have a dream too.” That we will honor theologian Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his role in trying to make America great with equality, peace and human dignity for all!
