Portagers win big on the road

LELAND — Onekama girls basketball had a convincing 61-32 win on Saturday over Leland (4-9, 2-8).

The 61 points was a season-high total, and so was the 38 points that the Portagers scored in the first half. Before Saturday the team had only broken 50 points once this season.

“My goal is to keep the score in the 40s, because then we have a chance. We’re not a high-powered team by any means, but I think we’re going to get there. When we’re playing the teams our size we’re competitive, but when we step out of our class then we’re not,” Onekama coach Jim Armstrong said.

The Portagers (6-7, 4-6) were led by a big game from Colleen McCarthy, who nearly had a triple-double. She finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds and 9 steals.

Elizabeth Domres also had 16 points and 8 rebounds, and Maggie Domres had 6 points and 8 rebounds.

The team started half with 20 points in the first quarter and 18 in the second to take a 38-19 lead into the break.

Onekama will be back on Tuesday at Buckley (3-11, 2-8).
