Area gas prices plunge

During the months of November and December, there were plenty of complaints about the unusually high gasoline prices in the Manistee area. But with the month of January comes a slash in prices that amounts to nearly a 12 cent drop for a gallon of gas. Since December, gas prices have dropped from the area of $1.18 to $1.21 down to $1.06 to $1.09 for regular unleaded.

Thieves can’t crack safe

Troopers at the Manistee Post of the Michigan State Police are investigating an attempted safe burglary at Don’s Super Service at 418 Parkdale Ave. Officers said the break-in was discovered Friday morning. Someone smashed out a window to enter the building, then attacked the safe with hand tools. The would-be thieves knocked the dial off the safe but were unable to gain entry.

Storm staggers boxing

The fierce blizzard which hit with such crippling force last week is still causing problems, especially with scheduled athletic activities. Tonight’s scheduled 29-bout card at the Grand Rapids Civic Auditorium is one example. The fights have been rescheduled for Wednesday night, and defending 178-pound novice champion Bob Doering can hardly wait. Bob advanced when his first opponent failed to pass the physical. And now another delay.

60 YEARS AGO

County Bureau has highest membership percentage in state

John Milarch, roll call manager of the Manistee County Farm Bureau, announces that Manistee County has again won first honors in the state. This time it is for highest percentage over goal with 500 memberships. The goal was 462.
