You and the government own your land

Rights of owning property are not absolute and do not include exclusive right to control the use of one’s land, according to a Michigan State University land and natural resource specialist speaking in Manistee on Monday. Raleigh Barlowe, who holds a doctorate of economics, said ownership of property includes a bundle of individual rights.

Inn burglarized

Manistee County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a breaking and entering discovered yesterday at the Wellston Inn. Deputies said someone forced open a rear door to gain entry. Taken were 30 packs of cigarettes, 25 disposable cigarette lighters and $40 in cash.

Licence plates

For the convenience of car owners living in Bear Lake and Kaleva in the Michigan Department of State is providing an itinerant license plate service in Bear Lake on February 13 and in Kaleva on February 12. Mrs. Hanna Morey, the local branch manager in Manistee, will be at the Village Hall in Bear Lake from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and February 13 at the Chevrolet Sales and Service in Kaleva.

350 present at ball

Unfavorable weather conditions and the threat of an approaching storm limited the attendance at the President’s Birthday Ball here Saturday night to approximately 350 persons.

Mercury hits 5 below

Manistee today was gripped by a cold wave that may grow more severe tonight. The mercury touched a point five degrees below zero early this morning, and climbed little during the day, hovering for the most part around the zero mark.
