Community education now a reality

Community education, the subject of a two-year debate, became a reality Monday when Margaret Chalmers, a 32-year old Central Michigan University graduate and former teacher, took over as director of a program serving the Manistee area. Mrs. Chalmers will be charged with setting up a community education program for residents of the City of Manistee and Filer, Manistee and Stronach Townships. Her salary is funded jointly by those municipalities and the Manistee Public Schools.

Betty Crocker honors

The Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow in the Arcadia High School is Mary Jo Gabel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Gabel. Bear Lake High School’s winner is Miss Roberta Hullinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hullinger. Each state homemaker will receive a $1,500 scholarship and an educational trip with her school advisor to Washington, D.C., colonial Willamsburg, Va. and New York City.

80 YEARS AGO

Rate highly

Tests which have recently been completed by the First and Second grade pupils throughout the public schools have been checked and results show the reading ability of the students compares favorably with the standards set up by the authors of the tests, Superintendent of Schools Dorr L. Wilde.

Chimney fire

Firemen answered a call this morning at 9 o’clock to extinguish a chimney fire at 158 Harrison St. Damage was slight.
