Pair suspected of dealing heroine, cocaine in Benzie County

BENZIE COUNTY — A police chase in Honor ended in Long Lake Township with the arrest of two men suspected of attempting to sell a substantial amount of heroin and cocaine.

On Friday, the Traverse Narcotics Team (TNT) received information from an anonymous source that two men from Indiana were attempting to sell heroin and cocaine in Traverse City and Honor, according to a press release.

TNT set up surveillance in the village of Honor on Friday afternoon in attempt to locate the suspects. After a lengthy surveillance detail, the suspect vehicle and both suspects were located at an Honor convenience store. TNT contacted the suspects in the parking lot. The suspect vehicle accelerated away from the TNT detectives, striking a TNT vehicle and disregarding fully marked Benzie County Sheriff and Michigan State Police patrol vehicles.

After a pursuit, which spanned from Benzie County into Grand Traverse County, the driver lost control on the slippery roads and drove into the ditch. The 36-year-old male passenger from South Bend, Ind., was taken into custody by the Michigan State Police without incident. The 25-year-old male driver, also from South Bend, Ind., fled the scene on foot into a Long Lake Township neighborhood.

Benzie County Sheriff’s deputies, with the assistance from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, set up a perimeter and started to track the suspect with a K-9 unit. A short time later, the suspect was located hiding under a residential deck, and was taken into custody without further incident. Both suspects are facing multiple felony charges including attempted delivery of heroin/cocaine, flee and eluding police, resisting and obstructing police and felonious assault, according to police

TNT extends thanks to the Benzie County Sheriff’s Office, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police Cadillac Post for each agency’s resources that were utilized to apprehend the two suspects.

The Traverse Narcotics Team is a multi-jurisdictional task force covering eight counties and consisting of detectives from the Wexford, Osceola, Missaukee, Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Antrim and Kalkaska county sheriff’s offices, along with the Traverse City Police Department and Michigan State Police.
