Winterfest brings fun, food to Beulah

BEULAH — Winterfest is coming to Beulah, bringing with it a variety of events to help residents and visitors shake off the winter blahs.

Winterfest will be held on Saturday, and features a variety of events throughout the day, starting at 8 a.m. with breakfast specials at The Hungry Tummy, L’Chayim Deli and Ursa Major.

Following breakfast, the Friends of the Darcy Library cookie sale will be begin at 10 a.m., in the Trailhead Building.

At 11 a.m. the annual poker run begins, and runs until 8 p.m. The guaranteed minimum jack pot is $200.

Around noon, events start to heat up in Beulah Park. Games for all ages include the frozen fish toss, the snowball throw, and frozen turnkey bowling, take place in the park throughout the day. Those looking for a little relaxation can enjoy a bonfire, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride.

Visitors can also warm up with the famous Chili Cook-Off, which will be held begin at noon and last until the chili runs out.

Area individuals, organizations and restaurants are encouraged to bring two gallons of their best chili by 11 a.m. on Saturday to the pavilion in Beulah Park Prizes awarded in each category. Registration forms are available at Benzie County Chamber of Commerce, on the Crystal Lake Community Business Association website at clcba.org. or call (231) 383-1120.

The International Weight Pull Association will again be hosting a dog weight pull, with registration starting at 10 a.m. between Crystal Lake and Beulah Park. Visitors can watch faithful canine companions pull weighted sleds from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Winterfest parade will be held at 3:30 p.m. in downtown Beulah, and is open to all businesses, organizations and individuals. The parade is also a chance to see the decorated outhouse sleds before the outhouse race, which follows the parade.

As for the outhouse race, the fastest three outhouses in each category win a trophy, and there will be a best in show awarded, as well.

Winterfest will wind down with a fireworks show over Crystal Lake at 7:15 p.m.
