MAPS is biggest city employer

The largest employer in the city is the Manistee Area Public Schools, with 254 employee, but the biggest taxpayer is Morton International, which has a taxable valuation set at $5,524,520, and which pays taxes of around $121,185.

Hospital bed limit passes house

Robert Trautman, administrator of West Shore Hospital, says he will take a “wait and see” attitude before deciding on the merits of legislation designed to hold down medical costs by eliminating excess hospital beds. The state House Wednesday approved the plan on the vote of 70-29 and sent it on to the Senate. The bill establishes a process for determining which areas of the state have more hospital beds than they need.

VanLiere at Lincoln School

Miss Manistee County, Janie VanLiere, will be performing at the Lincoln School Carni-Fair this Sunday at the school. The carni-fair will be held from 12 noon to 4 p.m. throughout the school building. Proceeds from the event will benefit the school.

Local garment firm acquires Cadillac plant

The Manistee Garment Company yesterday completed arrangements for taking over the former LeMode Garment Company plant was scheduled to reopen this morning. Officials of the local firm, confirming the purchase, said that it was part of an expansion program, made a necessary had been reached in the plant here which is operating at a level slightly higher than that at the same time a year ago.

Car damaged

A car owned by Carl Knaffle was slightly damaged this morning when a city truck, which had been parked on the east side of Maple St. near the City Drug Store building, rolled down the hill and crashed into the vehicle. No one was hurt.
