MANISTEE — Celebrating five years bettering the community, Manistee’s Matthew 25:35 food pantry held a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, with its many faithful and hard-working volunteers and Manistee Catholic Central students.

“We have a wonderful core of volunteers that help out year-round,” said Joan Gamache, pantry coordinator.

The pantry opened on Feb. 9, 2013.

On Friday, the luncheon was provided by a couple of anonymous donors, and Jerry Zupin and his crew.

During the past five years, Gamache said the pantry has served a total of 8,570 shoppers, 23,575 household members and distributed 393,900 pounds (197 tons) of groceries, fresh produce, eggs and meat. Hearts for Critters distributed 54,745 pounds of pet food.

Gamache said none of this would have been possible without the continuous, generous support of the community, as well as local grocers, merchants, and out-of-town or out-of-state donors.

To volunteer or shop at the pantry, contact either the Divine Mercy Parish office at (231) 723-2619 or Joan Gamache at (231) 398-0296. The next pantry date is on Friday, March 9.
